The Pros and Cons of Using Plesk

Plesk control panel is another software package for a web hosting control panel, similar to cPanel that allows any web hosting company to manage web hosting accounts easily. It allows web hosts to be able to administrate thousands of hosting accounts on a single server with the ability to work with VPS, shared, or of course dedicated hosting.

Plesk can be used for both Linux servers and Windows servers, whereas cPanel and other software packages on the market are used mainly with Linux web servers, making it a more worldwide choice.

What Does Plesk Manage?

This software package for control panels allows a website to do the following through a web-based browser.

  • Manage and upload files
  • Create FTP user accounts
  • Create as well as manage email accounts
  • Create and manage databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL
  • Add new domains and subdomains
  • Restore and backup site files
  • Manage files of web logs
  • Administrate DNS and other assets

These are many of the same functions that any control panel package of software allows the end-user to manage their web account with.  This interface software does cost more than most other control panel software but those that use it believe that a greater investment is to have an easy-to-use powerful interface.

Features That Plesk Is Known For

Plesk is more known for:

  • Automation
  • Modular – easily installs new features
  • Internationalized as it is available in several languages
  • Cost-effective

Parallels, which is the company that sells this software, provides numerous tutorials so a site owner can easily find more answers to the question, “What is Plesk?”.

Problems with Plesk

Plesk control panel software does have some known problems that might cause some web hosting companies to shy away from using it.

  • Security issues
  • Backup and restore – big drawback since Plesk takes a huge amount of server space to build the backup

But these problems are outweighed by the factor that this software is compatible with both Windows and Linux.

The Bottom-Line

An integrated interface plus simple installation makes Plesk a hot choice, not to forget the ability to install web applications in a matter of a few mouse clicks.  Despite issues VPS operators favor the software since:

  • It is a compact package that does not use up a big portion of system assets
  • Quite customizable
  • Good choice for shared hosting, dedicated hosting, VPS and all forms of hosting amounts

But this software package may not be that easy to use for the novice website owner.

Those who find it hard to understand the technicalities as well as automated set-up wizards still prefer cPanel over Plesk. The more technology a person knows the more they like this software package. The one advantage over the other software packages is still that it works with both Windows and Linux operating system which is a very powerful argument for using this software.

It is more expensive but for those who manage the intricacies of its automation function, can just set up the tasks to run automatically and forget about it, which makes it well worth the money for those that host a multitude of websites. It could be a totally different matter for the end-user just trying to manage a website especially if he doesn’t know much about technology.
